Almada in Lisbon
José de Almada Negreiros, Começar, 1968-69, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Almada Negreiros carried out several commissioned works, both in Lisbon, before the dictatorship (with the famed paintings for the Brasileira do Chiado cafe or the Bristol Club), and in Madrid (such as the bas-reliefs for Cine San Carlos). During the dictatorship, he collaborated mainly with architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, the high point being the Lisbon Maritime Stations. But he also did other works, privately commissioned, such as the iconic portrait of Fernando Pessoa for the former Irmãos Unidos Restaurant.
On the Lisbon map displayed in this room, ten places are marked where you can find works by Almada Negreiros: mural paintings, incised drawings, stained-glass panels, tapestry pieces or oil paintings. By clicking on each of these locations, visitors will be able to see and hear a little of their history. They are: The Church of Our Lady of Fátima, the Diário de Notícias building, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Ritz Hotel, the Águas Livres Block, the Court of Auditors, the University Campus, the Church of the Saint Constable, the Patrício Prazeres High School, and Casa Fernando Pessoa.
