Painéis Almada Negreiros Alcântara

The interpretative centre

The Almada murals at the maritime stations interpretation centre is a site devoted to the mural panels that artist Almada Negreiros painted for the two maritime stations designed by architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro in the 1940s. The stations are about 800 metres apart and a shuttle bus will take visitors from one to the other.

The Interpretation Centre tells the story of the mural paintings and the context in which they were created, of the artist and his work in the city of Lisbon, as well as the stories of those who passed through these stations during the second half of the 20th century, in an exhibition route comprising nine rooms: Quay, What the Walls Have to Tell, Passages, Departures, Arrivals, Mural History, Hearsay, Almada in Lisbon, and Almada Negreiros, Artist.

This website supports the Murals of Almada Interpretive Centre at the Maritime Stations and contains a selection of the information that can be seen at the Interpretive Centre and, in some cases, complementary information.

Throughout nine rooms, the story of the paintings, the artist and his work in the city of Lisbon are told, as well as the story of those who passed through these stations during the second half of the 20th century.
